Are vegetables the secret to beating stress?

It’s well known that vegetables are loaded with minerals and vitamins to keep your body healthy. Now researchers from the University of Sydney have found that eating your greens could have a significant impact on reducing stress, too.

The study found that people who ate three to four portions of vegetables a day had a 12 per cent lower risk of stress that those who ate only one serving or less. Those who had five to seven portions had a 14 per cent lower risk.

Sixty thousand Australians aged 45 or over were scrutinized, comparing their eating habits against their stress levels, which was measured by the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, a ten question survey which measures anxiety and depression.

The benefits were even more pronounced when it came to women. Women who ate three to four daily servings of vegetables had an 18 per cent lower risk of stress. Women who ate five to seven servings had a 23 per cent lower risk of stress than women who ate one serving or less a day.
